The Surf
The central coast of Costa Rica offers a wide variety of consistent surf and is the ideal place to base yourself for the duration of your visit. Playa Hermosa is perhaps the most consistent spot in Costa Rica with waves 365 days a year. Within a 20 mile radius are some of the best waves in the country including Escondida and Boca Barranca. Below is a complete list of nearby surf spots:
- Boca Barranca - Fast, perfect left hand rivermouth. Waves here can line up for 300 yards. Its second only to Pavones. This wave is extremely rippable and sometimes offers up good barrels.
- Dona Ana - Nice fast left hander breaking over a rock reef. This spot needs a bit more swell but is awesome. The wave gets faster and hollower as you go down the line.
- Puerto Caldera - Heavy, hollow right that breaks off a jetty over a sand bottom. This spot is similar to The Wedge in California, only it's a right. There is also a great left at the other end of the beach.
- Tivives - This is a long left point style wave with a good rivermouth and beach break. When the rivermouth is working you can catch some pretty sick lefts.
- Playa Valor - Rocky left point break that gets big and juicy. This spot is sure to be empty with some perfect surf.
- Escondida - Awesome left and right reef break. This wave is world class with a big south swell when the left lines up for days. You can get some serious barrels out here. The left next to our logo on this webpage is Escon.
- Playa Jaco - Super rippable beachbreak. It's a lot like so-cal beach breaks on a good day, except the water is 80°. It's a great change of pace when you want to get off your 6'8" and into something fun.
- Roca Loca - This right hand reef can get insane and uncrowded. It's right next to Playa Hermosa and breaks best on mid to low tide (when Hermosa closes out). This wave often bends towards you allowing for long extended bottom turns and huge hacks.
- Playa Hermosa - This world class beach break in like a mini Puerto Escondido. Big, heavy, and hollow. But if the swell is small you're guaranteed head high playful peaks all day long. Hermosa has waves 365 days a year.
- Estrellos - This is actually 3 or 4 breaks in one. There are some great outer reefs for longboarding here that produce super long rides all the way to the beach. Further down the beach are some really rippable beach breaks and river mouths. Also really consistent.
- Quepos/Manuel Antonio - There are a couple really good breaks here including a nice left and right reef break. You'll need a good swell for it to work, but the real attraction is the national park. If you get surfed out this is the perfect place to spend a day exploring Costa Rica's amazing bio-diversity.
